Dr. Carlson was on full time faculty at the Indiana University School of Dentistry for 38 years, retiring 2018 as Professor Emeritus. He held joint appointments in the Department of Cariology, Operative Dentistry and Dental Public Health and the Department of Comprehensive Care and General Dentistry, and served on the graduate faculty for MSD students in Operative Dentistry. For the second half of his career, he was the director of a Comprehensive Care clinic for D3 and D4 students. He directed the school's Global Service Learning programs, bringing many teams of students to Haiti and Ecuador. He recently retired from a part time private practice with Monon Family Dental in Indianapolis and continues part time at IUSD. He has been the Managing Editor of the Operative Dentistry journal since 1999.
