dr-rusty-morris2008 – Dr. Rusty Morris(Union Hall, Virginia)
Dr. Morris started life in southeastern North Carolina near the coast. He graduated from NCSU in 1974 and from UNC- Chapel Hill School of Dentistry in 1978. He owned his own practice in Eden, NC for 28 years before moving to VA. Dr. Morris is currently in full time private practice at Smith Mountain Lake.Since joining the academy in 1982, he has presented table clinics and been a member of the Seminar Committee, Special Projects Committee and Executive Council. Dr. Morris currently serves as Trustee and Secretary/Treasurer of the AOD Founders’ Fund. Dr. Morris has been actively involved with the Hollenback-Medina Operative Dentistry Seminar since 1981. He is a member of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators and a fellow in the International College of Dentists. He is Vice-President of the Dental Foundation of North Carolina and is a recent graduate of the Institute for Teaching and Learning Program offered through the Academy for Academic Leadership.

dr-frank-u-perry2007- Dr. Frank U. Perry

Dr. Perry graduated from St. Louis University Dental School in 1966 and earned a Masters in Education and Human Development in 1983 from The George Washington University. He served 21 years in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. The last seven years at the Naval Hospital Bethesda and the Naval Dental School at Bethesda Maryland. This tour included starting and directing the General Practice Residency program at the Naval Hospital for three years and four years directing the 2 year Comprehensive Dentistry Residency. After retiring from the Navy in 1987, Dr. Perry joined the faculty at Northwestern University Dental School as a Clinical Associate Professor.

He initiated an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program at Northwestern. In 1998 he became the Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs until 2000 when he joined the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Dentistry as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry. At both Northwestern University Dental School and at the University of Illinois, College of Dentistry, he has been honored as Teacher of the Year on numerous occasions.

Dr. Perry is also a diplomate of the Federal Services Board of General Dentistry and the American Board of General Dentistry. He served a an examiner and president of the Federal Services Board of General Dentistry.

Dr. Perry has been a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry since 1981 and has served as the chairman of the Local Arrangements Committee since 1987, Executive Councilor, and Vice-President. He is member and serves on the Board of Governors of The Chicago Odontographic Society. He is a member of the American Dental Education Association as well as the Chicago Dental Society and the Illinois Dental Society.

dr-susanne-t-grennell2006 – Dr. Susanne T. Grennell

She received a BA Degree from Elmira College in 1970 and her D.D.S. in 1975 from University of Buffalo in New York. At graduation she entered private solo practice of general dentistry in Billings, NY which she continues today.

She is a member of the American Dental Association, the New York State Dental Association, the Ninth District Dental Association, the Duchess County Dental Society where she served as President, the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, the R.V. Tucker Study Club which she founded Club Sixty One and served as President.

She has served the Academy as Executive Counselor 1999 – 2002, Vice President 2004 – 2005, President Elect 2005 – 2006 and President 2006 – 2007. She also served on the Scientific Sessions Committee 2005 – 2007 and is the Academy Web Author and Webmaster 2002 to present.

dr-frank-caughman2005 – Dr. W. Frank Caughman

He received a BS degree from Clemson University in 1976 and his D.M.D. from Medical University of South Carolina in 1979. After a two year GPR residency he entered Mississippi State University in obtaining a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology in 1985.

He joined the faculty of the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry Department of Restorative Dentistry. After four years he joined the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia where he served in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation (Chairman 1993 to 2003) and as Associate Dean of Patient Services 2003 to present.

He has served as Clinical Consultant for the commission of Dental Accreditation from 1998 to 2004, on the joint Commission on National Dental Exams – Operative Dentistry Test Construction Committee from 1991 to 1996 and on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.

He is a member of the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fouchard Academy and the Georgia Dental Association.

He has served the Academy as a councilor 1999 – 2002

dr-richard-s-kloehn2004 – Dr. Richard S. Kloehn

He received his D.D.S. from Northwestern University School of Dentistry in 1966 and entered into the private practice of general dentistry.

He accepted an appointment from the University of Colorado as Associate Professor of Restorative Dentistry from 1976 until 1988.

He is a member of the Centennial Dental Study Club, the Denver Academy of Restorative Dentistry, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, and the American Dental Association.

He has been an active member of the Academy since 1979 and has served on the Special Projects Committee (1998-2000), the Finance Committee (2000 to present), and as a councilor (1997-2000)

dr-richard-g-stevenson (1)2003 – Dr. Richard G. Stevenson III

He received his D.D.S. from University of California at Los Angeles in 1986. Upon graduation he entered the private practice of general dentistry. In 1994 he accepted a full time position at the University of California at Los Angeles in the department of Restorative Dentistry. There he earned the rank of Clinical Professor and was appointed Clinical Director and currently is Chairman of the Department of Restorative Dentistry.

He is a member and mentor of the Richard V. Tucker Cast Gold Study Club of Los Angeles (#8 of over 60 clubs in the Academy of Richard V. Tucker Study Clubs.)

He has served the Academy as a member of the Seminar, Continuing Education, and Nominations Committees. He joined the Executive Council in 1998 where he served as councilor, Vise President and President Elect until assuming the Presidency. He currently holds the office of Assistant Secretary of the Academy.

dr-maria-lopez-howell2002 – Dr. Maria Lopez Howell

She received her D.D.S. degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1983.

She entered private practice of general dentistry in Garden Ridge, Texas and also served as Associate Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from 1985 to 2001.

She is a member of the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association, the San Antonio District Dental Society and the Academy of General Dentistry, becoming certified in 1995.

She served on the American Dental Association Advisory Council where she was spokesperson and host of ADA Dental Minute.

She has served the Academy as a member of the Research Committee and as a Councilor from 1999 to 2001.

dr-ronald-c-house2001 – Dr. Ronald C. House

He earned his D.D.S. from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry in 1971 and his MS from the University of Michigan in 1982.

After his retirement from the U.S. Navy he entered the University of West Virginia University School of Dentistry as Director of Operative Dentistry.

He is a member of the American Dental Education Association and is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, and is a member of the American Board of Operative Dentistry which he served as President.

He has served the Academy on the Executive Council and the Membership Committee.

He earned his D.D.S. degree from St. Louis University School of Dentistry in 1959.

He practiced general dentistry in West Virginia.

He served as President of the Huntington WV Dental Society, President of the WV Dental Association, and on the WV board of Dental Examiners.

He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the George Hollenback Dental Study Club, the Academy of Gold Foil Operators and the American Association of Dental Insultants.

He was a member of the Executive Council of the Academy.

Dr. Berry was in Academics at the University of Texas. He was editor of the Condenser for the Academy.

1998 – Dr. William E. Hawkins

He earned his D.M.D. from Northwestern University School of Dentistry in 1954.

He is currently employed as a Consultant in General Dentistry.

He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists (Past President of the USA Section), Federation Dentair International and the Pierre Fouchard Academy. He also is a member of the American Association of Dental Consultants, the American Association of Dental Insultants, and the American Association of Dental Editors. He is Past President of the Arizona state Dental Association.

As President of the Academy he chartered the European Section of the Academy, designed and produced the podium covers for the Academy, and he has served on various committees.

dr-john-w-reinhardt1997 – Dr. John W. Reinhardt

He earned his D.D.S. degree from Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago, his MS from the University of Iowa School of Dentistry and his MPH from Harvard University.

He has practiced general dentistry before entering academia. He served as Chairman the Department of Operative Dentistry at the University of Iowa and his MPH from Harvard University.

He is a member of the American Board of Operative Dentistry and has served as Chairman of the Examining committee and on the Executive Council.

He has served the Academy as a councilor, Chairman of the Membership Committee, and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Founders Fund.

1996 – Dr. Joel M. Wagoner

He earned his D.D.S. from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1975.

He is involved in private practice and is Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry.

He is a member of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, the International College of Dentists, the American Board of Operative Dentistry, and the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry.

He has served on the Executive Council, Finance Committee as Chairman, Founders Fund, and Assistant Managing Editor and on the Review Board of the Journal of Operative Dentistry, and Treasurer of the Academy 1997 to present.

dr-thomas-g-berry1995 – Dr. Thomas G. Berry

He earned his D.D.S. in 1961 and his MA at the University of Kansas – Kansas City School of Dentistry.

He worked in his private practice from 1963 – 1968. At that time he entered full time academics at the University of Texas at San Antonio where he became Chairman of Restorative Dentistry. Currently he is Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Colorado.

He is a member of the International Association for Dental Research and the American Dental Education Association where he is Chairman of the Section of Operative Dentistry.

He is a charter member of the Academy and has served on various committees, on the Executive Council and as Assistant Secretary to the Academy from 1997 to 2005.

dr-warren-k-johnson1994 – Dr. Warren K. Johnson

He earned his D.D.S. degree from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1965.

He is in the general practice of dentistry and is serving as a clinical instructor at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. He is retired as a colonel of the U.S. Army Reserve. He also is a mentor of six study clubs.

He has served as a councilor on the executive council of the Academy

1993 – Dr. Richard B. McCoy

He earned his D.D.S. degree at the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1961.

He practiced general dentistry before joining the U.S. Navy from which he retired in 1988. He then joined the faculty of Northwestern University School of Dentistry and after several years transferred to the University of Washington School of Dentistry and is still active there.

He is a member of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, the International College of Dentists, and the American Dental Education Association of which he is the Chair of the Operative section.

He is a charter member of the Academy and has served on the Special Projects Committee, on the Executive Council, and as Editor of the Journal of Operative Dentistry.

dr-ralph-m-phelan (1)1992 – Dr. Ralph M. Phelan

He earned his D.D.S. degree from the University of Georgetown School of Dentistry in 1970.

He practices general dentistry in Concord, NH.

He is Past President of the New Hampshire Academy of General Dentistry, and a member of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators.

He has served the Academy as a councilor and member of the study club committee.

dr-jose-e-medina (1)1991 – Dr. Jose E. Medina

He earned his D.D.S. degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1948.

Upon graduation he entered a practice of general dentistry. He entered the world of academia first at the University of Maryland and later at the University of Florida where he became Professor of Operative Dentistry, Assistant Dean, Dean, and Assistant Vice President of the University of Florida Health Center retiring on January 1, 2000.

He has served as Past President of five Academies, mentored study clubs, is a member of the American association of Dental Schools, International Association for Dental Research, American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, the Academy of Oral Medicine, and operating study clubs.

He is a founding member of the Academy, worked on the development of the certification program for the American Board of Operative Dentistry and serves as its President, served as President of the Journal of the Academy of Gold Foil Operators, and served on the Executive Council.

He earned his D.M.D. from the University of Florida School of Dentistry in 1970.

He has a general practice of restorative Dentistry.

His activities in the academy include the Study Club Committee and the Executive Council. Dr. Bridgeman is President of the American Board of Operative Dentistry.

dr-anna-t-hampel (1)1989 – Dr. Anna T. Hampel

She received her Dr. Med. Dent degree from the University of Heidelberg in 1950 and entered the practice of general dentistry in Germany. In 1954 she achieved advanced standing status admission to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry earning her D.D.S. degree in 1956 and her Masters Degree in 1958 from the University of Minnesota.

After graduation she began her academic career as an instructor in the Department of Operative Dentistry at the University of Minnesota and in 1992 retired at the rank of Professor from the Department of Oral Science.
Her academic endeavors comprised teaching, research and administrative duties as Director of Comprehensive Oral Care including Patient Admissions, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning. She fostered and chaired the reciprocity based International Dental Student Exchange Program at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. She was actively involved in recruiting and encouraging female high school students to the profession of Dentistry.
She is a member of the American Dental Association, the Minnesota and California State Dental Associations, the American Association of Dental Schools, the International Dental Research Society – Biomaterial Section.

She is a fellow of the American College of Dentists (where she served as Secretary and Chair of the Upper Midwest Section), and is a fellow of the International College of Dentists.

She is a charter member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry. Service to the Academy includes the Research Committee as member and Chair, The History Committee as member and Chair, the Executive Council, and currently is a member of the Founders Fund of the Academy.

dr-j-martin-anderson (1)1988 – Dr. J. Martin Anderson
He earned his D.D.S. degree in 1965 at the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

He entered the private practice of general dentistry and in one year joined the faculty of the University of Washington School of Dentistry Department of Restorative Dentistry. Currently he is Course Director of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Washington and continues his private practice.

Currently he is Chair of the Academy of Operative Dentistry Founders fund, has served as a councilor, and was Managing Editor of the Journal of Operative Dentistry from 1974 to 1999. He is a founding member of the Academy and received the Award of Excellence from the Academy.
He is a member of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, and other gold foil study clubs.

dr-wIliam-n-von-der-lehr (1)1987 – Dr. WIliam N. Von Der Lehr

He earned his D.D.S. at the Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago in 1955.

His career led him to the Chairmanship of the Department of Operative Dentistry at LSU and at the University of Texas, Huston, retiring in 1989.

He has served as Vice President of Faculties for the A.A.D.S., on the ADA council of Dental Materials, the Scientific Sessions, Constitution and Bylaws, Special Projects, and Research Committees of the Academy of Operative dentistry.

He earned his D.D.S. degree in 1970 at the Baylor University College of Dentistry. Upon graduation he entered private practice, which he continues today.

He has served the Academy on the Board of the Founders Fund, as Councilor and on the Finance Committee. He also served a four-year term as a Trustee of the ADA.

dr-lawrence-l-clark1985 – Dr. Lawrence L. Clark, Sr.

He earned D.D.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Maryland Baltimore College of Dental Surgery.

Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Air Force practicing general dentistry and served as Director of AEGD and GPR for the Air Force and base Dental Surgeon. In 1980 he left the Air Force for the position of Professor of Operative Dentistry at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry. In 1985 he moved to the University of Florida where he also was a Professor of Operative Dentistry until his retirement in 1997.

He is a founding member of the Academy and has served as an Executive Councilor, Editor of the Condenser (10 years), and on the Nominating Committee and Finance Committee. Dr. Clark received the AOD Award of Excellence in 2003.

Served as President of the Academy of Operative Dentistry in 1983.

dr-paul-h-hoflin1982 – Dr. Paul H. Hoflin

He graduated from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland in 1948 with a D.D.S. degree.

He practiced general dentistry while serving at the University of West Virginia School of Dentistry retiring in 1998 as Clinical Professor.

He is a founding member of the Academy. Activities include membership on the finance and nominating committees, Chair of the Founders Fund 1983-1991, and Councilor 1971-79.

dr-harold-r-laswell1981 – Dr. Harold R. Laswell

He received his D.D.S. from the University of Indiana in 1961 and followed with a M.S.D.

He joined the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in the department of Restorative Dentistry, chairing the department from 1968 to 1988. He served as Dean for Patient Care from 1988 to 1998 and is now Dean for Professional Relations.

He achieved the Title of Professor in 1975 at the University of Kentucky.

He is a founding member of the Academy and served as Vice President and President Elect before his Presidency. He also has been active as Chairman of the Special Projects Committee and a reviewer for the Journal of Operative Dentistry.

dr-richard-v-tucker1980 – Dr. Richard V. Tucker

He received his D.D.S. Degree in 1946 from Washington University School of Dentistry in St. Louis.

Following graduation he entered general practice which he continues to this day.

He is a founding member of the Academy and served as councilor. He has presented many clinics and lectures before the Academy and nationally and internationally. He is past president of the Washington State Dental Association, and the Academy of Gold Foil Operators. He is also a member of the American College of Dentists and the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry.

Awards bestowed on him are the Biaggi Gold Medal from the Italian Congress for his contribution to dental education in Italy, the Medal of Excellence of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, the Distinguished Service Award from the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia and was chosen Distinguished Alumnus of Washington University in 1996.

He is also the founder of the Tucker Study Clubs of which there are fifty operating in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

The Board of Operative Dentistry was established during his term.

dr-nelson-w-rupp1979 – Dr. Nelson W. Rupp

He earned his D.D.S. Degree in 1943 from the Ohio State College of Dentistry, also receiving B.A. and M.S. degrees there.

He practiced general dentistry before joining the Navy where he served for thirty years. Following his naval career he was employed by the American Dental Association in their research center at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

He is a member of the American Dental Association, the American College of Dentists, the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, as well as our Academy.

Along with his Presidency he also served the Academy as a councilor, and chairman of the Research Committee. He is past President of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators.

dr-donald-a-welk1978 – Dr. Donald A. Welk

He earned his D.D.S. Degree in 1962 at the University of Washington.

Upon graduation he joined the faculty of the University of Washington serving until 1966. In 1966 he moved to the University of Kentucky where he served until 1971.

He then joined the faculty of the University of Oklahoma, as Chairman of the Division of Restorative Dentistry. He retired in 2001

He served on the Council of Dental Education of the ADA, is a member of the International Association for Dental Research and is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.

He served on the Executive Council of the College from 1974 until 1976, as Vice President, President Elect and President

dr-d-jackson-freeze1977 – Dr. D. Jackson Freeze

He received his D.M.D. from the Tufts University School of Dentistry in 1946.

Upon graduation he became an oral surgery resident at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital Medical Center in New York City where he instructed in the Oral Surgery Department and taught in the Restorative Department of the Columbia University School of Dentistry. Later he was an Associate Professor of Operative Dentistry at both Tufts and Boston University’s Schools of Dentistry.

He retired in 1986 and now spends his time with his family, music and dental lectures.

He is a member of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists, the American Dental Association (served as Chairman of Operative Section), American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, American Academy of Gold Foil Operators and the American Academy of Crown and Bridge Prosthodontics.

dr-h-william-gilmore1976 – Dr. H. William Gilmore

Received his D.D.S. in 1958 from the University of Indiana School of Dentistry where he also achieved MSD and BGS degrees.

He entered general practice before returning to The University of Indiana where he attained the position of Professor of Operative Dentistry and Dean of the School of Dentistry.

He retired in 1998 from his educational activities and is now Executive Director of the Science Education Foundation of Indiana.

He was Chairman of the committee which established the Journal of Operative Dentistry.

dr-clifford-m-sturdevant1975 – Dr. Clifford M. Sturdevant

He received his D.D.S. Degree in 1943 from Emory University School of Dentistry.

Upon graduation he served in the U.S. Army in 1943-44. In 1945 he accepted a full time position teaching crown and bridge at Emory until 1950. In 1950 he moved to the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry becoming Chairman of Operative Dentistry in 1959, a position he held until his retirement in 1980. While there he published the Art and Science of Dentistry which became the best selling dental book in the world.

He is a Charter Member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry and has also served as a councilor.

dr-bruce-b-smith1974 – Dr. Bruce B. Smith

He received his D.D.S. Degree from the North Pacific College of Oregon School of Dentistry (presently the University of Oregon) in 1942.

While working in a private general practice in 1942-43 he also was a Clinical Associate Professor serving part time an North Pacific College and also later at the University of Washington. He taught Operative Dentistry and Crown and Bride and Ceramics. He retired in 1998.

He is a member of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the Academy of Restorative Dentistry, and the Academy of Gold Foil Operators, rising to the Presidency of the Restorative and Gold Foil Academies.

He is a member and a Founding Father of the American Board of Operative Dentistry.

dr-george-w-ferguson1972,1973 – Dr. George W. Ferguson

First President of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, serving in 1972 and 1973. He is one of the Founding Fathers of the Academy.

He received his D.D.S. Degree in 1934 from the University of Nebraska School of Dentistry and in 1949 earned a Masters Degree from Georgetown University School of Dentistry.

He moved from Nebraska to Washington D.C. where he served as a research guest in the research department of the National Bureau of Standards.

As a Naval Officer during WWII he taught at the Officer Education and Training Department (where he became Chief) of the Naval Dental Training School in Bethesda, Maryland.

In 1963 he was appointed Chief of the Dental Department, U.S. Naval Station, New Port, Rhode Island.

From the Navy he moved in 1966 to the Department of Operative Dentistry at State University of New York at Buffalo where he retired in 1972 as Professor and Chairman of Restorative Dentistry.

He is member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, Academy of Restorative Dentistry, The Academy pf Gold Foil Operators and the American Dental Association.

He received the Hollenbeck Award of the Academy of Operative Dentistry in 1980.

dr-thomasDr. Thomas G. Berry
ASSISTANT SECRETARY – 1997-2005
(Colorado)Dr. Berry is a graduate of the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry. He served as a faculty member of that School in addition to conducting a practice in Kansas City. He directed the Operative Dentistry at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry until he assumed the position of Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry. In 1988, he joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School as Chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry, a position he held for over 12 years. Recently, he rejoined the Faculty at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry and is now serving as Clinical Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry. He is currently directing the esthetic dentistry program.Dr. Berry is the author of over 100 published articles, abstracts, and textbook chapters. He is a reviewer for five dental journals and was a section editor for the Mosby-Yearbook of Dentistry. He has been a member of the Test Construction Committee for the Operative Dentistry Section of the National Board Examination. He is Past-President of the Academy of Operative Dentistry and has just completed his term as Chair of the Operative Section of the American Association of Dental Schools. He currently serves as the Coordinating Editor for the monthly publication, “Practical Reviews in Cosmetic Dentistry”.

Dr. Berry maintains a part-time dental practice.

He is one of the Founding members of the Academy.He was graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1945.

After serving in the Navy for two years he began a private practice. He has also held appointments as clinical professor at Northwestern University and the University of Minnesota.

He is a member of many distinguished Academies including the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators where he served as president. He has received multiple honors and awards including the Award of Excellence from this Academy in 1990.
